Is Sanskrit A Dead Language ?
Introduction
Most people in english socities say that sanskrit is a dead language but in Nepal and India it is one of the popular.
It is not a dead language, it seems to learn hard for many people who don’t obey the rules of sanskrit. If you read properly it can be one of the simplest. Most people in europe and USA staring to chant he mantra which belongs directly to sanskrit, then how can we say it a dead ?
History
- Origin: This oldest language was originated from Nepal by Panini guru before thousands of years ago. In Nepal there is a popular hill in middle part of country which name was from the guru panini.
- Classical Time: Before the british rule in India it was in the peak state. Many people love to speak and write in sanskrit but british army ban it in Nepal and India then it break its rhythm for 400 years
There are lots of ancient mantra which directly related to this historical language. Now a days also people love to chant it everyday. You must listen the word OM which the popular ford in sanskrit. If you chant gayatri mantra , shanti path mantra then you must know it’s importance.
Linguistic Characteristics of Sanskrit
- Grammar and Structure: Sanskrit grammer have most unique feature. In english you must listen singular and plural only but in sanskrit there is dualism also. There is multiple ways to say the same word

The no of students are very low but there are lot of schools and gurukulam in Nepal and India. 10% of indian popular can easily talk in sanskrit and 17% of Nepalese can talk easily in this language. There are many hindu sadhus and rishis who love to chant the mantra for whole day.
- Government Initiatives: Government also playing cruicial role to inaguration new institution in Nepal. Government used to organize literature competetion and speech competetion which directly influence to student.
- Media and Technology: Online media also have big role for advertisement of this language. You can easily search in youtube and google for free online courses. Many guru and rishi of Nepal provide the Sanskrit-English courses.
Arguments for Sanskrit Being a Dead
- Less Use In Daily Life
Due to grammar and itโs own kind of discipline, Sanskrit became rare. You need strong commitment to learn this ancient language. English and other new linguistic are very popular easy to communicate so that sanskrit is less used in daily life.
- Lack Of Native Speaker
Sanskrit is not the main language in any country today. While India and Nepal have historical ties to Sanskrit, its use has largely diminished in everyday communication.
In Nepal, Sanskrit is primarily used for Vedic texts and rituals, and only a few people with a strong grasp of its grammar can communicate in it.
Similarly, in India, various derived languages have replaced Sanskrit for most practical purposes. As a result, while Sanskrit holds cultural and historical significance, it is not widely spoken as a primary language in either country.
- Functional Replacement
Modern languages such as English, Hindi etc replaced the ancient language for communication and administrative work. People from Britain and USA use English as a main language of the world then sanskrit became rare.Sanskrit is only used for vedic works in temples and chanting.
