Sanskrit Days, Months, and Time

Introduction

Sanskrit is the easiest language, and we are trying to make it even easier. If you want to communicate, you should know many repeating words and sentences. To explain the current day or time, we have provided the tables below. In this article, we converted the day’s names into Sanskrit. There are two words for each day; you can choose the easier one.

Days are called वासरा: (Vāsarāḥ) or वार (Vāra) in Sanskrit.

Specific Day Names

  • ✔ Yesterday is परह्यः, also called parhyaaha
  • ✔ Before yesterday is प्रपरह्यः, also called praparhyaaha
  • ✔ Today is अद्य, also called adhya
  • ✔ Tomorrow is श्वः, also called shryaha

ऋतु (Ritu / Seasons)

Ritus are periods of time. For example:

  • Basanta Ritu: चैत्र (Chaitra) and वैशाख (Vaiśākha)
  • Grishma Ritu: ज्येष्ठ (Jyeṣṭha) and आषाढ़ (Āṣāḍha)
  • Varṣā Ritu: वर्षा ऋतु, occurs in Sahuna month

There is a fixed time and month for each season according to Vedic culture. Hindu calendar can capture and predict the future.

Types of ऋतु

  • वसन्त ऋतु (Vasanta)
  • ग्रीष्म ऋतु (Grīṣma)
  • वर्षा ऋतु (Varṣā)
  • शरद् ऋतु (Śarad)
  • हेमन्त ऋतु (Hemanta)
  • शिशिर ऋतु (Śiśira)

Month Names in Sanskrit

वैशाख, ज्येष्ठ, आषाढ, श्रावण, भाद्रपद, आश्विन, कार्तिक, मार्गशीर्ष, पौष, माघ, फाल्गुन, चैत्र

Units of Time in Sanskrit

1. Yāma (याम): The 3-Hour Quarter

A day has 8 Yāmas: 4 daytime + 4 nighttime. Yama is used to find the best time for meditation and rituals.

2. Muhūrta (मुहूर्त): The 48-Minute Interval

One Muhūrta is 48 minutes. A day has 30 Muhurtas. Brahma Muhūrta (before sunrise) is sacred for chanting, meditation, yoga, and important ceremonies.

How to Say Times in Sanskrit

  • एकवादने = 1 o’clock
  • द्विवादने = 2 o’clock
  • त्रिवादने = 3 o’clock
  • चतुर्वादने = 4 o’clock
  • पञ्चवादने = 5 o’clock
  • षट्‌वादने = 6 o’clock
  • सप्तवादने = 7 o’clock
  • अष्टवादने = 8 o’clock
  • नववादने = 9 o’clock

  • ✔ 6:15 → सपादषड्वादनम् (Quarter past 6)
  • ✔ 6:30 → सार्धषड्वादनम् (Half past 6)
  • ✔ 6:45 → पादोनसप्तवादनम् (Quarter to 7)
  • ✔ 6:40 → चत्वारिंशदधिकषष्ठवादनम्
  • ✔ द्वादश वादनम् = 12 o’clock
  • ✔ पञ्चवादनस्य अर्धातीतः = 5:30
  • ✔ अद्य नववादनात् पादोनदशवादनं गतं = 9:45
